The Quebec International Bonspiel (QIB) is one of the oldest uninterrupted amateur sporting competitions in the world, having run each year since 1913 in the city known as the cradle of curling in North America. The sport was introduced here in 1760 by the Scottish soldiers who were part of the British forces that participated in the Battle of the Plains of Abraham.
This men’s tournament is known for its hospitality and the camaraderie of the players. The registration fees for 2010 will be of $ 800.00 plus taxes ($ 903.00) for a team of 4 players ($ 200.00/player) before October 15, 2009, $ 920.00 plus taxes ($ 1,038.45) from October 16 to December 1st 2009 ($ 230.00/player) and $ 1,040.00 plus taxes ($ 1,173.90) after December 1st 2009 ($ 260.00/player). Many social events are organized throughout the week of competition. There is a minimum of 6 games and a maximum of 9 games per participating team. The event champion teams win trophies, commemorative badges or pins.
Every year the QIB welcomes teams from across Canada, the United States and Europe. The Bonspiel is held at the end of January, coinciding with the start of the famous Québec Winter Carnival.
In 2010, the QIB will be played between January 24 and 29.
